What was daily life actually like in communist Poland? The Museum of Life under Communism (Muzeum Zycia w PRL, or MZPR) at ul. Piekna 28/34 answers with genuine relics, artefacts and everyday stories from the 1944-1989 era. What brings bittersweet memories to older Poles becomes a discovery for younger visitors - a look at social life and popular culture before the internet and modern technologies took over.
Hours and tickets
The museum is open Monday to Thursday 10:00-18:00, Friday 12:00-20:00, and Saturday-Sunday 10:00-18:00. Tickets cost 32 PLN regular and 22 PLN reduced (students up to 26, pensioners over 65, people with disabilities and their guardians, honorary blood donors; discounts are not combined). Group tickets for 11 or more people are 26/20 PLN, and family tickets run 76 PLN (2+1) and 92 PLN (2+2). Tickets are sold online or at reception, with hourly online caps of 20 tickets on working days and 10 on weekends - and the museum does not refund or rebook online tickets, so choose your slot carefully. A maximum of 50 visitors can be inside at once.
The walkman audioguide
The signature extra is the communist-type audioguide: a vintage walkman cassette player for 10 PLN. Alternatively, an audioguide app for Android and iOS is included in the ticket price - bring your own headphones, or buy a pair at the museum for 10 PLN. Guided tours cost 160 PLN in Polish and 170 PLN in a foreign language, booked in advance by phone or email.
The museum cafe
Do not skip the cafe, styled on a famous ancient cafe from 1950s Warsaw. Coffee comes from a vintage 1960s machine and pairs with a traditional wuzetka cream cake or communist-era waffles layered with butterscotch. Last order is at 17:40.
For schools - and at your home
School groups can book museum lessons (180 PLN plus 17 PLN admission per person, group leaders free). Unusually, the museum also travels: a retro Nysa van brings a suitcase of communist props and a guide to kindergartens, schools or private addresses for a 45-minute show on themes like cooking, hygiene, music or shopping in the People's Republic.
