From a builders canteen to a legend
According to the club's official history, Stodola opened on 5 April 1956 as the Central Students Club of the Warsaw University of Technology, in the former wooden canteen where builders of the Palace of Culture and Science had eaten. It moved four times - to Trebacka, Wspolna and Nowowiejska streets - before settling into its purpose-built home at Batorego 10 in 1972.
Jazz and cabaret
The club first cabaret programme premiered on 22 May 1957, and jazz was there from the start: the first three editions of the Jazz Jamboree festival (1958, 1959 and 1960) took place at Stodola. Tadeusz Kantor, the theatre director, reportedly considered Stodola the only place in Warsaw for his performances and lectures.
Today
Stodola remains one of the city's busiest concert venues, with two stages and a calendar mixing Polish and international acts - see our live music clubs guide for more.
