Every European capital has an old town; almost none had to build theirs twice. Warsaw's Old Town was methodically destroyed after the 1944 uprising and then reconstructed brick by brick in the 1950s, down to the painted facades - an achievement that earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.

The essential walk

  • Castle Square and Sigismund's Column: start at the vast plaza where King Sigismund III Vasa has stood on his column since 1644, looking down the Royal Route.
  • The Royal Castle: the reconstructed seat of Polish kings and later of parliament, now a museum of state rooms and rescued art.
  • Old Town Market Square: the heart of the district, ringed by tall, narrow burgher houses in pastel shades, with the Warsaw Mermaid - sword raised, shield on arm - in the middle. In winter the square hosts the city's main Christmas-market ice rink.
  • St John's Archcathedral: the Gothic brick cathedral where coronations and royal weddings took place, itself rebuilt from ruins.
  • The Barbican and city walls: walk the surviving stretch of the medieval fortifications between the Old and New Towns for the classic postcard view.

Practical notes

The Old Town is a pedestrian zone best reached on foot from the Royal Route (Krakowskie Przedmieście) or by bus to the Castle Square stop. Early mornings are quietest; summer weekends bring crowds, buskers and outdoor cafe tables across the square. Entry to the square, walls and cathedral area is free; the Royal Castle interiors are ticketed.

Pair the walk with the Vistula Boulevards just below the escarpment - see our [boulevards guide](/a/vistula-boulevards-guide).
