Few shopping addresses in Europe sit inside a working monument. Elektrownia Powisle at Dobra 42 is a red-brick early-20th-century power station that supplied the Powisle district for decades, fell silent, and then reopened in 2020 after a major redevelopment as a retail and dining complex.
What is inside
The complex mixes a food hall of restaurant counters and bars, fashion and design shops, services and a large beauty hall. Original machinery, pipework and the monumental turbine-hall scale were kept in place, so lunch happens among the bones of the old plant. Seasonal events and markets fill the courtyards through the year.
Why it matters
The project became a reference point for adaptive reuse in Poland: instead of demolishing the station, the developers built the new complex around it. For visitors it is one of the easiest ways to see industrial Warsaw from the inside, a short walk from the Copernicus Science Centre and the Vistula Boulevards.
Visiting
The address is Dobra 42, in Powisle. The complex is open daily; individual restaurants and the food hall keep their own hours, typically running late into the evening. The nearest big transport hub is around the Nowy Swiat - Uniwersytet area, and the riverfront is a few minutes away on foot.
