Forests and Nature Reserves Inside Warsaw: Where the City Goes Wild

What to know: Warsaw protects genuine woodland inside the city: the Bielany Forest reserve (130 hectares of old-growth), Kabaty Woods (nearly 925 hectares, the largest reserve in Mazovia) and Kampinos National Park at the western border. All are free to visit on marked trails.

Few capitals keep this much wild nature inside their borders. Warsaw's forests are not park scenery - two are formal nature reserves, and a national park begins where the city ends. All facts below come from the authorities that manage them.

Bielany Forest

The Bielany Forest covers 151.82 hectares in north Warsaw, of which 130.07 hectares form the Las Bielanski nature reserve, protected since 1973. Old-growth oak and hornbeam, a small peat bog and the Rudawka stream make it the most natural woodland in the city - once a royal hunting forest where the Camaldolese monks settled in 1639.

Kabaty Woods

At the end of metro line M1, Kabaty Woods spreads over nearly 925 hectares - the largest forest complex inside Warsaw and the largest nature reserve in the Mazovia region, protected since 11 August 1980. Flat trails make it the classic Warsaw weekend walk.

Kampinos National Park

Just past the western districts, Kampinos National Park protects a vast inland dune forest listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve - close enough for a half-day trip from the centre.

Smaller escapes

For less wild but equally green hours, Pole Mokotowskie and Skaryszewski Park offer meadows and water inside the dense city, and our autumn foliage guide maps the colour season across all of them.
