Among the ramparts of the Warsaw Citadel, one museum asks for silence. The Katyn Museum is a place of remembrance for the victims of the Katyn massacre - the mass executions of Polish officers and members of the intelligentsia carried out in 1940 by the NKVD on the orders of the Soviet authorities.

A museum of memory

Founded in 1993 and located since 2015 within the grounds of the Warsaw Citadel, the museum combines the austere character of the historic fortress with a modern, symbolic exhibition. Through its displays it preserves the history of the Katyn crime and honours the thousands of citizens of the Second Polish Republic who lost their lives, serving as one of the key institutions of national memory in Poland.
