Park Ujazdowski: A Garden Jewel by the Royal Route

What to know: Park Ujazdowski, just off Aleje Ujazdowskie, is a showcase of late-19th-century Polish garden art: three distinct garden rooms - a formal parterre, a playground quarter and a naturalistic southern section with a pond and island - restored in 2000-2002, fenced and closed at night.

Between the Royal Route and Łazienki lies one of Warsaw's most refined green spaces. The city's greenery authority calls Park Ujazdowski a model example of Polish garden art of the late 19th century - a "calligraphic" park of finesse, rich tree species and garden sculpture.

Three garden rooms

The park divides into three distinct rooms. By the main entrance from Aleje Ujazdowskie, a representative parterre with a rectangular flower bed of Milano roses and limestone vases rises to a small viewpoint. The northern quarter holds the playground, framed by an oval ornamental lawn and a historic horse-chestnut avenue. The southern section is the naturalistic heart: a pond with an island, viewing mounds and secluded corners.

Restoration and visiting

A 2000-2002 revalorisation to designs by Tomasz Zwich and Jakub Zemla kept the historic layout while renewing plantings and surfaces. The park is fenced and closed at night, with five entrances - the main one from Aleje Ujazdowskie, others from Plac na Rozdrożu, Piękna street and the Łazienkowska side.

Around the park

Just across the Łazienkowska route stands the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, and Łazienki Park begins a short walk south. The Museum of the Earth sits nearby on the escarpment.
