Saska Kepa: pre-war villas, modernist streets and the geodetic centre of Warsaw
What to know: Saska Kepa is a green, villa-filled neighbourhood on the right bank of the Vistula, prized for its interwar modernist architecture and calm streets. Once nicknamed Holandia, it keeps a small-town atmosphere minutes from the centre - and since 2019 it officially contains the geodetic centre point of Warsaw, marked with a plaque by the Saska beach.

Ask Varsovians where the capital feels least like a capital and many will point across the river to Saska Kepa. Formally only a part of the city within the Praga-Poludnie district, in practice it works like its own small town: quiet streets, pre-war villas behind trees, and a pace that the local community site says has kept the features of a province next to a metropolis of nearly two million.
Elegance and artists
In the past the area was nicknamed Holandia, and later earned the label elegancja-francja. When the neighbourhood filled with elegant luxury villas in the 19th century, artists, architects, painters, writers and lawyers began settling here - a tradition that still defines its character. Many street names come from countries and cities, others honour notable people and events, and memorial plaques scattered around the neighbourhood mark where famous residents lived and worked.
A modernist open-air museum
Saska Kepa stands on modernism. The war spared many of its historic buildings, and a walk between Francuska, the neighbourhood's main street, and the riverside reveals villa after villa in interwar functionalist style. Part of the neighbourhood is entered in the provincial register of monuments, though the local site notes that many examples of pre-war modernism still lack formal listing.
The centre of Warsaw - literally
On 27 July 2019, surveyors from the Honorary Krakow Meridian action calculated the exact geodetic centre of Warsaw - the centroid of the city's area, accounting for its irregular shape and the curvature of the Earth. The point turned out to lie on the bank of the Vistula by the Saska Kepa beach, and it is marked with a small plaque. The same action determined the geodetic centre of Poland, near Kutno.
Visiting
Come for an unhurried weekend walk: start at Rondo Waszyngtona, wander Francuska and the side streets named after cities and countries, look for the plaques, then continue to the Vistula bank and the beach. The neighbourhood pairs naturally with the Skaryszewski Park, one of Warsaw's finest landscape parks, which begins just across Washington Avenue.
