Most visitors never ride metro line M1 to its southern end - and that is their loss. Ursynow, one of the 18 districts of Warsaw, is the city's big southern neighbourhood: modernist housing estates from the 1970s and 80s, older villa corners, universities and schools, and a forest for a backyard.

Kabaty: metro to the forest

The Kabaty terminus of line M1 is the district's landmark station - its wood-clad interior nods to the forest outside. From the platform it is a few minutes on foot to Kabaty Woods, the nearly 925-hectare nature reserve that forms the southern edge of the district and of Warsaw itself.

Estates and everyday Warsaw

Ursynow's estates are a living museum of late-communist urban planning - long slab blocks set in generous greenery - now softened by mature trees, local markets and cafes. It is Warsaw at its most everyday: schools, playgrounds, allotment gardens and neighbourhood bakeries rather than monuments.

Visiting

Ride M1 south through the district: Imielin, Stokłosy, Ursynow and Kabaty stations each serve their estate. Combine the trip with Wilanow Palace - a short bus ride east - or with a long walk in the woods, best in the autumn colour season.
