North of the centre, the city climbs the Vistula escarpment and exhales. Zoliborz took its name from the French joli bord - beautiful bank - and still feels like a garden suburb inside the capital: low pre-war streets, trees everywhere and the river below.

The Citadel

The district's biggest sight is the Warsaw Citadel, the 19th-century fortress now home to the Polish Army Museum and the free Katyn Museum - half a day of history behind the brick walls.

Plac Wilsona

Zoliborz's hub, Plac Wilsona, holds a metro station on line M1 whose architecture has won international design awards - a rare case where the commute is a sight in itself. The square around it gathers cafes and local shops.

Escarpment and river

Walk west and the district drops to the Vistula: the Museum of Sport and Tourism stands on Wybrzeze Gdynskie above the bank, and below it the wild riverbank leads to Rusalka beach, one of the city beaches from our Warsaw beaches guide, with sunset views toward the Old Town.

Visiting

Metro line M1 serves Zoliborz at Plac Wilsona and Marymont. The district pairs with the nearby Bielany Forest for a full green day in north Warsaw.
