Wilanow Guide: Royal Palace, Poster Museum and the Garden City

The essentials: Wilanow, the southernmost district of Warsaw, is an easy half-day trip from the centre: the baroque royal palace of King Jan III Sobieski, the world's first poster museum in its former stables, and the planned modern quarter of Miasteczko Wilanow, all within walking distance of each other.

At the southern edge of the capital, where Warsaw ends and the fields begin, Wilanow keeps the city's royal address. The City of Warsaw's district profile places it between the western bank of the Vistula and the Vistula Escarpment and calls it one of the most attractive districts of Warsaw; its southern border is also the border of the capital itself.

The royal palace

The district's heart is the Wilanow Palace, the baroque residence of King Jan III Sobieski - the only Warsaw royal residence that survived the Second World War almost intact, now a museum with lavish interiors and formal gardens.

The Poster Museum

In the palace's former stables, the Poster Museum guards one of the largest poster collections in the world - the first museum of its kind anywhere, and the home of the famous Polish School of Posters.

Miasteczko Wilanow

North of the palace, Miasteczko Wilanow is a planned 21st-century quarter of apartment blocks, shops and cafes built around the Temple of Divine Providence - modern Warsaw growing toward its royal edge.

Visiting

Buses from the centre and from Wilanowska metro station serve the palace complex. Combine the palace and the Poster Museum in one day, and add a walk in neighbouring Ursynow or the Kabaty Woods for a full southern day out.
