Srodmiescie Guide: Making Sense of the Warsaw City Centre
What to know: Srodmiescie is the city centre of Warsaw and the district where most visitors spend their time: the Old Town and Royal Castle at its north, the Royal Route through its middle, the Palace of Culture as its landmark and Lazienki Park at its southern end.

The City of Warsaw describes Srodmiescie simply: the city centre, a district with many faces. That is accurate - almost every image of Warsaw you have seen comes from here, and a first visit can fill days without leaving its borders.
The historic north
At the district's northern end, the Old Town and the Royal Castle anchor the UNESCO-listed historic centre, with the Museum of Warsaw telling the city's story on the market square.
The Royal Route
From the castle, the Royal Route runs south along Krakowskie Przedmiescie and Nowy Swiat - past the Presidential Palace, the University of Warsaw and the Chopin trail - toward the great museums.
The modern centre
The Palace of Culture and Science towers over the commercial heart of the district, with its 30th-floor viewing terrace. South along the escarpment lie the Royal Baths (Lazienki) Park and the Ujazdowski Castle centre for contemporary art.
Visiting
Metro lines M1 and M2 cross at Swietokrzyska station in the middle of the district. Walk the Royal Route north to south and you will cross most of this guide in a single afternoon.
